In the backdrop of the deteriorating situation at the Line of Control (LoC), the international community has come face-to-face with its greatest challenge yet – the ever-mounting nuclear threat emanating from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The failure of international pressure to prevent Islamabad’s nuclear ambitions has left the region’s stability at a crucial juncture.
Given the alarming scenario, it is imperative that international leaders take decisive steps to tackle the Pakistan nuclear menace, starting with Washington. United States President Joe Biden’s administration has an undeniable role to play in resolving this issue that poses an enormous threat to international peace and security.
The nuclear issue at the heart of the dispute between India and Pakistan can be seen as a direct outcome of Pakistan’s continued occupation of Kashmir. It’s a reality that has gone largely unaddressed by the global community so far. The international community’s inability to curb Pakistan’s nuclear ambitions is particularly disappointing, especially considering its long-standing ties with countries like China and the United States.
One key aspect of the situation is Islamabad’s reliance on its nuclear capabilities as a tool for leverage. The city of Rawalpindi, where the Pakistan military establishment is based, has for years been engaged in a high-stakes cat and mouse game. This game is played with its nuclear arsenal and potential adversary India. However, Islamabad’s nuclear posture has not helped its cause or that of the region.
For several years, the situation between India and Pakistan has been volatile. But, the stakes were significantly raised after the February 2021 Pulwama attacks carried out by Pakistan-based militants. The situation took an even more alarming turn after the August 2019 revocation of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution by the Indian government, effectively nullifying the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.
Pakistan’s reaction to India’s move has been a classic case of nuclear brinksmanship, with the country’s nuclear capability becoming a central focus of its diplomatic efforts. However, the world has thus far been unable to persuade Islamabad to give up its obsession with the nuclear issue. In order to avoid a disaster, the US is duty-bound to play a decisive role in resolving this issue.
Washington’s role in this matter cannot be overstated, especially given the deep historical ties between the two nations. It’s critical that the current US administration re-evaluate its stance on Pakistan, which has thus far been too lenient given the nuclear threat posed by the country. Given the alarming circumstances, the White House must take definitive and decisive actions to dissuade Islamabad from going over to the dark side.
In an era marked by global nuclear threats and international tensions, it’s high time the US takes concrete steps to address the issue at hand and protect global stability.
