A joint venture between Utah-based Vector Defense and Saudi startup SR2 Defense Systems is making significant strides in expanding Saudi Arabia’s local defense manufacturing capabilities. The partnership, dubbed SR2Vector, is developing a state-of-the-art factory near Riyadh, which will serve as the primary production site for the SKYWASP, a cutting-edge one-way attack drone.
Designed with the intention of mirroring the functionality of Shahed drone systems, the SKYWASP is engineered to execute high-precision strikes at a considerable range. Notably, the drone is capable of targeting adversaries situated at a distance of up to 1,500 kilometers, a range that is particularly pertinent to Saudi Arabia, given the country’s geographical proximity to regional hotspots, such as Iran.
This development is part of a broader strategy by Saudi Arabia to bolster its local defense industry as outlined under Vision 2030. The ambitious national development plan, unveiled in 2016, aims to wean the country off its reliance on imported goods and diversify its economy by fostering a vibrant local manufacturing sector.
