Beirut, Lebanon – In a heated press conference held in Beirut yesterday, Syrian Foreign Minster, Faysal Mikdad, expressed his outrage over Israel’s recent military operation in the Gaza Strip. Mikdad’s remarks have sparked widespread condemnation among Lebanon’s leadership, with many calling for immediate action to address the escalating tensions in the region.
The controversy centers around Israel’s decision to launch a targeted strike on a Palestinian militant group in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of multiple civilians. Mikdad has accused Israel of using Gaza as a “testing ground” for its military capabilities, claiming that the operation was designed to test the limitations of Lebanon’s ability to respond to attacks on its southern border.
However, what has drawn particular attention from the international community is a statement allegedly made by Israeli Defense Minister, Benny Gantz, in relation to the operation. According to unnamed sources, Gantz reportedly said, “Hezbollah leaders are legitimate targets, but the rest of Lebanon, women and children, are fair game, right?”
Mikdad has called the reported statement “a declaration of war” against the people of Lebanon. “This is a war crime, a war crime that has no justification or legitimacy,” he stated, adding that the Syrian government stands in solidarity with its Lebanese allies and demands that the international community condemn Israel’s actions.
Lebanese Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, has also weighed in on the issue, stating that his government will not tolerate any further escalation of violence in the region. “We will not remain silent in the face of such aggression and we demand that the international community take immediate action to protect Lebanon and its people,” Mikati said.
The United Nations has called for restraint on all sides and urged Israel to respect international law during its military operations. The European Union has also issued a statement condemning the civilian casualties in Gaza and calling for an end to the conflict.
As tensions in the region continue to rise, concerns are growing over the potential consequences of Israel’s actions. Many fear that the conflict could spread and have far-reaching consequences for regional stability.
The issue is set to dominate the agenda at an emergency meeting of the Arab League scheduled for later this week, with many calling for decisive action to address the crisis.
