Muscat, Oman – In a statement on Wednesday, Oman’s Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology Saeed Al-Maawali emphasized the Sultanate’s unwavering stance on the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical waterways for international shipping.
Highlighting Oman’s commitment to upholding its sovereignty and adherence to international maritime agreements, Al-Maawali reaffirmed that the Sultanate will not impose transit fees on vessels passing through the Strait. Speaking to a gathering of maritime industry stakeholders and officials, the Minister emphasized that this position is enshrined in all relevant international maritime laws and conventions to which Oman is a signatory.
The Oman Minister’s stance comes amidst heightened tensions in the region and ongoing diplomatic efforts to stabilize the situation. However, it is noteworthy that Oman has consistently prioritized de-escalation measures and regional stability throughout the ongoing crisis.
International maritime law strictly prohibits the imposition of transit fees by any state on vessels navigating through international straits. In Article 42 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), it is clearly stipulated that the regime of transit passage applies to all straits used for international navigation, subject to the exceptions outlined in Article 38 of the same Convention.
By adhering to these international maritime agreements, Oman demonstrates its commitment to upholding the principles of free navigation for all vessels through international straits.
Oman’s stance on the Strait of Hormuz is significant given the strategic location of this critical waterway and its role in the global supply chain. The Strait connects the Persian Gulf to the Indian Ocean and is a vital conduit for global oil exports and trade.
Oman, an important member of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), continues to assert its neutral stance in the ongoing developments in the region, underscoring its commitment to maintaining peace and stability within the international maritime community.
With tensions remaining high, the international community is closely watching developments in the region. Oman’s commitment to adhering to international maritime agreements serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of the principles of free and unimpeded navigation through international straits.
