The US Navy’s carrier strike group has successfully showcased the capabilities of its MQ-25A Stingray program in a recent long-range maritime operation against a Chinese radar and anti-ship missile site. The exercise highlighted the advantages of the MQ-25A aircraft in providing extended-range fuel offloading capabilities, thereby increasing the operational range and effectiveness of strike packages.
According to official sources, a US carrier strike group had set its sights on targeting a long-range radar and anti-ship missile site located approximately 1,550 kilometers away, a distance far beyond the reach of Chinese anti-ship missile threat zones. To achieve this objective, four F/A-18E/F Super Hornets were deployed, each laden with strike weapons and two drop tanks, to undertake the mission.
As the Hornets approached their designated rendezvous point around 926 kilometers from the carrier, two MQ-25A Stingrays intercepted the strike package. The MQ-25A, equipped with the capability to offload fuel at extended ranges, then provided the Hornets with an estimated 3.4 tonnes of additional fuel each. This critical assistance granted the F/A-18s the necessary fuel reserves to successfully complete their mission.
In contrast, if the MQ-25A had not been deployed, the Hornets would have had to rely on four to five F/A-18s acting as buddy tankers, which can offload an average of 3 tonnes of fuel each at such a distance. The absence of the MQ-25A would have forced the Hornets to reduce their strike package or divert through additional stops to refuel, significantly reducing their operational effectiveness.
This mission demonstrates the MQ-25A’s capacity to enhance the strategic reach of US carrier strike groups, particularly in high-risk environments where Chinese anti-ship missiles pose a persistent threat. By providing long-range fuel offloading capabilities, the MQ-25A has enabled the US Navy to effectively extend its operational area, thereby increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of its strike packages.
