GAZA CITY, TUESDAY 16 MAY – The usually joyous and festive atmosphere of Eid al-Fitr has been marred by the intense violence that erupted in various areas of Gaza City, as Israeli forces launched a barrage of airstrikes and artillery strikes in the wake of heightened tensions.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of utter devastation, with buildings reduced to rubble and civilians caught in the crossfire. “Bodies are scattered everywhere, and the sight of wounded people, some trapped under the rubble, is heart-wrenching,” said a local resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “The sounds of bombing and the smell of smoke and fire are everywhere. It’s a scene that one would not want to witness, especially on a day meant for celebration and joy.”
The scale of the destruction and the number of casualties have yet to be confirmed. However, hospital sources report a surge in the number of patients being admitted, with many critically injured. Emergency services are working tirelessly to rescue those trapped, while also attending to the medical needs of the wounded.
The Israeli military has claimed that its actions are a response to continued rocket attacks by militant groups in Gaza, as well as an attempt to weaken the Islamic Jihad and Hamas. However, human rights groups have criticized the Israeli military for its disproportionate use of force, which they claim has resulted in excessive harm to civilians.
As the international community expresses its concern over the deteriorating situation, many in Gaza have spoken out against the Israeli military’s actions, labeling them as a blatant disregard for human life. “This is not an armed conflict, but a war against an entire population,” said a human rights activist, who requested anonymity for safety reasons. “We can only hope that international pressure will help to bring an end to this cycle of violence and restore the peace and security that we all yearn for.”
In a statement, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) appealed for an immediate cessation of hostilities, citing the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. “The scale of destruction and the growing numbers of casualties are alarming, and we urge all parties to respect international humanitarian law and to prioritize the protection of civilians,” said a spokesperson.
The Eid celebrations, which mark the end of Ramadan, are usually a time of great joy and festivities, but for the people of Gaza, this Eid has been marked by devastation and despair. As the situation continues to unfold, the international community is watching with growing concern, and many are calling for an immediate end to the violence and a resumption of a lasting peace.
