Tyre, Lebanon – April 15, 2024
Clashes in the port city of Tyre, which has served as a major conduit for fuel shipments into Lebanon, escalated yesterday evening as reported by witnesses. Aerial bombardments by Israeli Defense Forces targeted what Israel claims are Hamas-affiliated positions. The assault resulted in widespread destruction and a significant loss of life.
Footage shared on social media captured the massive explosion that rocked the city at approximately 7:45 PM Local Time. The images illustrate the intense power of the air raid, with shockwaves and flames engulfing nearby buildings and infrastructure.
Eyewitnesses describe chaotic scenes as people fled for shelter and medical aid poured in to treat the injured. The full extent of the destruction and loss of life is still being assessed, with rescue efforts underway.
According to various reports, the Israeli strikes targeted a fuel depot in the port area of Tyre. The blast sent a large black plume of smoke into the sky, signaling the extent of the devastation.
“It was a massive explosion,” said Amira, a local resident. “People were screaming, running for cover. It was a nightmare.”
The Lebanese military and local emergency services are working to evacuate those trapped beneath the rubble and provide care to those injured in the blast.
Since the start of April, tensions between Israel and Palestine have escalated with each side exchanging attacks. On Tuesday, Israeli forces launched precision airstrikes targeting what Israel claimed were rocket launching sites in Gaza.
A spokesperson for Israel Defense Forces stated that the strikes were launched “to neutralize the threat of rocket fire emanating from Gaza” while an official from the Hamas-affiliated group emphasized that the “resistance would not be swayed by aggression.”
As tensions remain high, regional players are working to diffuse the situation, advocating for a return to calm and restraint.
