A heightened state of alert has been activated across Romania in response to an increasing number of aerial intrusions into its airspace. For the first time, authorities in Romania reported an incident in which a Russian drone was intercepted and impacted on its territory, specifically in the small eastern town of Galati.
According to sources within Romania’s Ministry of Defence (MOD), the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was tracked by Romanian Air Force personnel while in close proximity to key infrastructure. After repeated warnings from Romanian authorities, the Russian UAV was intercepted, resulting in its collision with the terrain.
Romania, which has maintained a neutral stance on international conflicts, has expressed concerns over the recent uptick in incursions by unidentified aerial vehicles originating from Russia. Since 2020, a series of close encounters have been reported between Romanian and Russian aircraft, primarily around the country’s Danube Delta region. Diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the tension between the two nations have produced limited results.
“This recent incident further strains an already strained relationship,” declared Alexandru Rafila, Romania’s Defence Minister, during a press briefing. “The incident poses a serious threat to our air safety, national security, as well as the safety of our people.”
In response to the incident, Romania has activated its National Defence Strategy (SND), an initiative aimed at bolstering the country’s defensive capabilities through enhanced military preparedness and coordination with NATO. Romanian military officials have also strengthened cooperation with neighbouring countries to monitor the regional airspace and ensure effective responses to similar incidents.
The Russian side has maintained a cautious silence on the matter, with Moscow-based authorities failing to comment directly on the incident. Romanian officials have expressed their intentions to request clarification from Russia regarding the motivations and scope of its drone operations near the Romanian border.
Amid rising concerns, the Romanian government has reaffirmed its commitment to regional security and cooperation. “We are committed to upholding our international treaty obligations and working with neighbouring countries to address this pressing issue,” Rafila said.
The incident has set a renewed focus on strengthening Romania’s military presence in the region, reinforcing its ties with NATO, and improving diplomatic relations with other key European nations.
