A Ukrainian FP-1/2 drone allegedly struck Russia’s Admiral Essen Project 11356 frigate at Novorossiysk naval base on May 23. According to unofficial reports, the incident has left the vessel severely damaged, though details about the extent and nature of the damage remain uncertain.
The alleged attack comes at a time of heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine following the invasion of the latter by the former in February 2022. Since then, both parties have continued to engage in a series of aerial battles and cyberattacks that have significantly heightened the stakes in what is widely regarded as an ongoing proxy war.
While details about the incident remain scarce, multiple Russian sources, including local news outlets, reported that the drone, allegedly flown by Ukraine’s military forces, crashed into the Admiral Essen’s hangar, which stores aviation equipment. The official Russian Navy has yet to disclose information about the incident’s aftermath.
Following reports of the alleged drone attack, Ukraine’s armed forces announced a statement claiming responsibility for the strike. Per this statement, Ukraine aims to disrupt Russian efforts to maintain control over the contested waters surrounding Ukraine. It further emphasized its determination to defend its territory and to thwart ongoing aggression from the eastern side of the border.
Ukraine has faced significant difficulties in engaging with Russia’s naval forces at the latter’s naval base. Russian security measures have been put into effect on a broad scale, with the establishment of anti-aircraft missile systems to protect key installations from similar attacks.
However recent developments have shown Russia to be facing an array of new risks from Ukraine in the ongoing naval conflict. While Moscow has sought to minimize public scrutiny of what appears to be an unprecedented escalation, several incidents have emerged, in which drones have crashed into the Russian warships docked in various ports throughout the Black Sea.
While international reaction to the attack is yet to emerge, many are likely to view the incident as a further display of the rapidly evolving nature of the conflict in Ukraine. As tensions continue, global powers will be watching closely as the situation unfolds.
Novorossiysk remains an essential strategic location, as the major Russian naval facility in the region. Any potential disruption to port operations could have a significant impact on Russia’s military presence in the Black Sea.
Russia and Ukraine are yet to officially comment on ongoing negotiations.
