The United States Navy has formally christened a new Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, in honor of American patriot and naval hero John Paul Jones. The christening ceremony took place on May 21st, at Bath Iron Works in Maine, with senior military officials and dignitaries in attendance.
Commissioned as USS John Paul Jones (DDG-53 was renumbered, the new ship bears the name of a naval legend who is still widely celebrated for his bravery and strategic thinking during the American Revolutionary War. The ship is the 69th ship in the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer series, and it will be the first to serve in the US Navy with a hull number greater than 67.
Speaking at the ceremony, US Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro stated that the John Paul Jones represents a continuation of the nation’s long history of naval excellence and service. “She embodies the qualities that we look for in our sailors and our ships, and in many ways, she is a bridge between our nation’s past, present, and future,” Del Toro said. “We gather today to celebrate the birth of a new ship, but more importantly, we honor the ideals and values that John Paul Jones embodied – courage, duty, and a strong commitment to our nation.”
The USS John Paul Jones is armed with the latest Naval Integrated Combat Systems (NIC), which enable the ship to engage various targets simultaneously, both at sea and in the air. The ship’s advanced sensors, radar systems, and communication technology make it one of the most technologically advanced warships in the world.
In a nod to the ship’s namesake, the USS John Paul Jones is equipped with a plaque commemorating John Paul Jones’ famous words: “I have not yet begun to fight.” The plaque serves as a reminder to all sailors serving on the ship that they are part of a long tradition of bravery and patriotism.
The USS John Paul Jones is expected to be commissioned into US Navy service in the near term. The new destroyer will join a fleet that includes some of the most advanced and technologically sophisticated warships in the world, representing a powerful symbol of US maritime power and influence. The christening ceremony marked a significant milestone in the USS John Paul Jones’ journey to serve the US Navy, and it is expected to be one of the most capable warships in the fleet.
In a statement, Rear Admiral Charles M. Bradford, commander of the Destroyer Squadron 6 said: “The USS John Paul Jones will serve as a testament to the ingenuity and skill of the US Navy. I am honored to serve as a commanding officer to this ship and her sailors.”
This highly advanced destroyer is set for deployment to the Asia-Pacific region later this year, as part of the ongoing rebalance of US naval assets in the region.
