A United Airlines Boeing 737-900 passenger plane en route from Chicago, Illinois to Minneapolis, Minnesota was forced to divert to Madison, Wisconsin on Wednesday afternoon after a passenger attempted to breach the cockpit.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and local authorities, the incident occurred at around 2:45 pm local time when the individual, described as a male in his mid-40s, attempted to gain access to the cockpit by opening an emergency exit door. The pilot of flight UA 2661, a 737-900 aircraft with 174 passengers and crew members on board, immediately took control of the situation and alerted air traffic control, who then notified the FAA.
The plane was subsequently diverted to Dane County Regional Airport in Madison, Wisconsin, where it landed safely at 3:20 pm local time. The suspect was taken into custody by local law enforcement authorities without incident, and an investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
