Human Rights Organizations Criticize Azerbaijan’s Handling of Armenian POWs Following Latest Revelations

Human rights organizations have condemned Azerbaijan’s treatment of Armenian prisoners of war (POWs), with new allegations emerging of mistreatment and executions. The criticism comes after revelations in recent weeks have highlighted the severity of the situation.

In the conflict over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh in 2020, Azerbaijan launched a military operation to retake control of the territory from Armenian forces. The clashes resulted in significant losses on both sides, with numerous reports of POWs being detained and held in Azerbaijan.

Human Rights Watch has raised concerns about the treatment of Armenian POWs, with some alleging that they were subjected to physical and psychological torture. The organization also reports that many POWs were denied access to medical care and were not provided with adequate food and shelter.

The situation is particularly worrying, given that Azerbaijan has not signed the Geneva Conventions, which outline the rules for the treatment of POWs. The country’s human rights record has also come under scrutiny in the past, with reports of excessive use of force and mistreatment of civilians.

The criticism from human rights organizations has been echoed by the Armenian government, which has repeatedly called for Azerbaijan to release the detained POWs and provide information about their whereabouts. Tigran Balayan, a spokesperson for the Armenian Foreign Ministry, stated that “the mistreatment of POWs by Azerbaijan is a flagrant violation of international law and basic human rights.”

The situation highlights the ongoing tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which have been at odds over Nagorno-Karabakh for decades. The conflict has resulted in significant human suffering and economic costs, with numerous reports of civilian casualties and infrastructure damage.

Human rights organizations are calling on Azerbaijan to take immediate action to address the situation, including releasing the detained POWs and providing information about their whereabouts. The international community is also being urged to put pressure on Azerbaijan to comply with international law and respect human rights.

In response to the criticism, the office of Azerbaijan’s President, Ilham Aliyev, has stated that “all detained military personnel are being treated in accordance with international law.” However, the statement has been met with skepticism by human rights organizations, which argue that the treatment of POWs has been far from satisfactory.

The situation remains a source of concern for human rights organizations and the international community, with calls for greater transparency and accountability from Azerbaijan.
