In a move aimed at improving public safety and reducing stress on celebrities, the Los Angeles City Council has passed a new ordinance banning large-scale paparazzi events in public spaces. The council voted unanimously in favor of the measure, which is expected to take effect within the next 60 days.
The ordinance, which was introduced in response to growing concerns about the impact of aggressive paparazzi behavior on celebrities and the public at large, prohibits the use of certain tactics associated with large-scale paparazzi events. These tactics include, but are not limited to, the deployment of camera traps, drone surveillance, and the coordination of multiple photographers to swarm a celebrity’s location.
Proponents of the ordinance, including council members and celebrity advocates, argue that the measures will help to reduce the risk of accidents and injuries associated with large-scale paparazzi events. They also contend that the ban will promote a more positive and respectful environment for celebrities and ordinary citizens alike.
“I am thrilled that the council has taken this important step towards protecting the rights and safety of our city’s residents and visitors,” said Councilmember Paul Koretz, who sponsored the ordinance. “We must ensure that our community is a safe and welcoming place for all, regardless of their status or fame.”
Under the new ordinance, photographers and media outlets found guilty of violating the rules may face fines and penalties, including the loss of their city permits. City officials will also be authorized to issue cease-and-desist orders in cases where paparazzi activity is deemed to be causing a disturbance or creating a safety hazard.
While some industry insiders have expressed concerns that the ban will infringe on their freedom to cover news and events, many celebrities have welcomed the move as a long-overdue intervention. Angelina Jolie, who has long been the target of intense media scrutiny, issued a public statement praising the council’s actions.
“I am grateful to the Los Angeles City Council for taking this step to address the scourge of aggressive paparazzi behavior,” she said. “This measure will help to promote a safer and more respectful environment for all of us, and I applaud their commitment to public safety and well-being.”
As the ordinance takes effect, many in the entertainment industry and beyond are watching closely to see how it will affect the way media outlets cover celebrities and events. For now, however, one thing is clear: the era of large-scale paparazzi events is coming to an end in Los Angeles.
