Romania Identifies Russian-Origin Drone Behind Weekend Crash in Galați

BUCHAREST, ROMANIA – In a statement released earlier today, Romania’s President Nicușor Dan confirmed that a Ukrainian drone that had crashed over the weekend in the northeastern city of Galați was of Russian origin.

According to the technical report finalized by Romanian state specialists, the drone that crashed in Galați is an uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) of the Geran-2 model, produced by Russia. The report’s findings have been met with serious concerns from Romanian authorities regarding the potential implications of this development.

The incident occurred late Saturday night, with reports emerging that a UAV was seen crashing in the Galați area. An investigation was prompty launched by local authorities, resulting in the identification of the downed drone as a Geran-2 UAS by specialists from the Romanian Ministry of Defense’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) Research and Development Department.

President Dan issued a statement in the wake of the revelation, expressing concern over Romania’s increasing presence on the global surveillance radars. “As President of Romania, I emphasize that our country will continue to remain vigilant and resolute in the face of external aggression and the threats they bring,” he said in an address from the Presidential Palace.

Geran-2 drones – Russian military UAV technology developed by JSC RT Dynamics, Russia’s primary company manufacturing unmanned combat air vehicles – have been involved in several high-profile incidents over the years. These incidents have highlighted the proliferation of advanced surveillance technology in both legitimate and illicit contexts.

Romania is an integral NATO ally, and as such, the revelation of a Russian-origin drone in its airspace raises serious concerns for regional security. In a bid to address such threats, the Romanian government has pledged a renewed focus on bolstering its national defense capabilities, particularly in the realm of aerial surveillance and reconnaissance.

As international tensions continue to escalate in Eastern Europe, Romania’s leadership is urging vigilance among its citizens and an unwavering commitment to national security. This pledge is a reflection of Romania’s deepening integration with its NATO allies amid rising concerns over potential regional threats.

The Romanian Ministry of Defense has stated that all relevant agencies and institutions will work closely together to assess the potential implications of this incident and to take the necessary measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
