Holocaust Survivors’ Families and Descendants Plead for Preservation of Bunkers Used as Refuge

In a poignant appeal, families and descendants of Holocaust survivors have urged the Polish government and local authorities to preserve the remnants of the Judenlager – a network of underground bunkers that served as a sanctuary for Jews fleeing persecution during World War II.

The plea comes as a growing number of Judenlager bunkers are being demolished, or their remains are being destroyed, due to concerns over their safety and structural integrity. Local authorities have deemed the bunkers a threat, citing the dangers of collapse and the risks associated with unauthorized access.

However, families and descendants of Holocaust survivors, who have long considered the Judenlager bunkers a sacred reminder of the atrocities committed during the Holocaust, argue that the removal of these structures is an erasure of history. They claim that the bunkers hold significant cultural and historical value, serving as a poignant reminder of the resilience and determination of those who managed to survive the unimaginable horrors of the concentration camps.

“It’s like trying to erase a part of our family’s history,” said Barbara Goldberg, a great-niece of a Holocaust survivor who took refuge in one of the Judenlager bunkers. “These bunkers were our safety, our lifeline, and now they’re being bulldozed. It’s heartbreaking.”

The appeal for preservation has been taken up by a number of organizations, including the Association of Jewish Communities in Poland and the Polish Jewish Heritage Foundation. Their efforts are aimed at finding a balance between the competing priorities of heritage preservation and public safety.

“We understand the concerns over safety, but we believe that these bunkers can be preserved in a way that respects both their historical significance and the concerns of local residents,” said Adam Rosenblum, director of the Association of Jewish Communities in Poland.

A recent meeting between local authorities and Holocaust survivor families has revealed a glimmer of hope, with proposals for the creation of a museum or memorial center at the site of some of the remaining Judenlager bunkers. While the plan is still in its infancy, many believe that it represents a promising step forward in preserving the history and legacy of the Holocaust.

As families and descendant continue to advocate for the preservation of the Judenlager bunkers, they remain hopeful that their voices will be heard and that the remnants of these underground sanctuaries will be protected for future generations.
