Dutch Police Confronted over Handling of Pregnant Refugee at Zeist Center

Amsterdam, Netherlands – A disturbing video has surfaced of Dutch police officers engaging in a physical altercation with a visibly pregnant woman at a refugee center in Zeist. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and a renewed call for reform within the police force, which has been criticized for its handling of vulnerable asylum seekers.

The footage, captured by a witness, depicts two police officers attempting to restrain the pregnant woman, who is shouting and trying to break free. One officer can be seen grasping her arm aggressively, while the other attempts to push her against a wall. The incident took place on Tuesday evening, when the officers allegedly responded to a disturbance call at the center.

According to reports, the woman, who has been identified as a 25-year-old Syrian asylum seeker, was being evicted from the center after a dispute with other residents. Eyewitnesses claim that the officers used excessive force, citing that the pregnant woman posed no immediate threat.

“This is absolutely unacceptable,” said Amnesty International Netherlands spokesperson, Lotte Steuten. “The use of force against a pregnant woman, particularly in a situation where she is likely to be vulnerable and in need of support, is a clear breach of her human rights. We urge the Dutch authorities to take immediate action to address this incident and implement measures to prevent such mistreatment from occurring in the future.”

An investigation into the incident has been launched by the Dutch police, with an internal review set to determine whether the officers involved acted appropriately. The police force has faced criticism in recent months for its aggressive approach to handling asylum seekers, with several high-profile incidents of violence and mistreatment sparking widespread condemnation.

The National Ombudsman’s office has also been notified of the incident, with the office’s chairman, Alex Brenninkmeijer, stating that he will be conducting a separate investigation to determine whether the police acted in accordance with established protocols.

This incident has further strained relations between the police and the refugee community, which has long complained of being treated with disrespect and mistrust. Advocates for refugees are calling for increased transparency and accountability within the police force, as well as enhanced training to ensure that officers are equipped to handle complex situations involving vulnerable individuals.

In a statement, the Ministry of Justice and Security acknowledged that the incident was “disturbing” and promised to address the issue through an “objective investigation”. The ministry added that it valued the well-being and safety of all asylum seekers and vowed to take necessary steps to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

As the investigation unfolds, the incident continues to spark heated debate within the Netherlands, with many calling for a more humane approach to policing and a greater emphasis on supporting vulnerable asylum seekers.
