In a move that reflects its continued commitment to international counter-terrorism efforts, the Costa Rican Directorate of Intelligence and National Security (DIS) has apprehended a Palestinian national believed to have ties to the Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas.
A statement issued by DIS confirms that a person identified by the surname Abuawad, whose full name was not disclosed, was taken into custody on suspicion of maintaining links to Hamas.
Hamas, which has been designated as a ‘terrorist organization’ by the Costa Rican government, has been a focal point of international concern. Since 2001, various countries worldwide, including the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and others, have designated Hamas a terrorist entity due to its involvement in armed conflicts with Israel.
The arrest of the Abuawad individual is reportedly linked to an investigation initiated by DIS. According to sources close to the inquiry, the suspect had been under surveillance prior to his arrest, which was undertaken at a location in Costa Rica.
Following the arrest, Costa Rican authorities issued a statement emphasizing the nation’s zero tolerance stance on terrorism. As part of its ongoing commitment to prevent and counter the proliferation of terrorism, the Costa Rican government has implemented a raft of laws and policies aimed at thwarting and prosecuting terrorism-related activities.
This move to designate Hamas as a ‘terrorist organization’ underscores the nation’s stance against such groups, which are seen as posing significant threats to regional and global security. It also reflects the country’s resolve to adhere to international counter-terrorism standards and to contribute to global efforts to counter terrorism.
In a recent address to the nation, the Costa Rican President emphasized her government’s dedication to countering terrorism through both domestic and international co-operation, reiterating the nation’s commitment to regional and global security.
While the details of the Abuawad case are still emerging, this latest development illustrates the proactive posture the Costa Rican government has adopted in tackling terrorism both domestically and internationally.
