Lebanon-Israel Talks at Risk of Collapse Amid Shift in Premise

Tensions between Lebanon and Israel continue to escalate, as Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter warned that the fifth round of talks between the two nations is on the verge of derailing. Leiter’s comments, made on social media, underscore the challenges facing efforts to establish a lasting peace between the two countries, with Iran playing a key role in the stalled negotiations.

According to Leiter, the original premise of the talks, which were initiated with the support of the United States, was for Iran to be fully expelled from Lebanon, with the eventual dismantling of Hezbollah. However, he lamented that the focus has now shifted, with the international community instead seeking to restrain, rather than remove, the Iranian-backed militant group.

The Israeli Ambassador expressed concern over three critical issues: whether disarming Hezbollah remains a core aspect of the talks; whether the existing ceasefire agreement between the two nations is still binding; and how to prevent Iranian funds from reaching Hezbollah through the US-Iran Middle East negotiation. Leiter underscored that if these concerns are not adequately addressed, the entire peace process is likely to collapse.

“We are in a train wreck,” Leiter said. “Four rounds ago, we were all on the same train, with the US as the locomotive heading towards full peace – Iran out, Hezbollah dismantled. Today, the premise has shifted.” He noted that if Iran is allowed to maintain its influence in Lebanon, particularly through Hezbollah, the efforts towards peace would be for naught.

Furthermore, Leiter emphasized that a failure to ensure the Iranian funds do not reach Hezbollah could have devastating consequences. “If we cannot guarantee that, all words here will not change reality,” he warned. “Hezbollah will simply rebuild itself.”

Leiter’s words serve as a stark reminder of the challenges facing the international community in its efforts to broker a lasting peace between Lebanon and Israel. The shift in the premise of the talks and the continued involvement of Iran in the region raise serious concerns about the potential collapse of the negotiations.

The US, which had initially supported the talks, has been criticized for its handling of the US-Iran Middle East negotiation agreement, particularly its failure to impose adequate sanctions on Iran. The agreement has been seen as a key factor in the shift in the talks’ premise, with many arguing that it has emboldened Iran’s proxies in the region, including Hezbollah.

As tensions between Lebanon and Israel continue to rise, it remains to be seen whether the international community can find a way to address the concerns raised by Ambassador Leiter and prevent the collapse of the talks.
