Sweden Takes First Steps Towards Enhanced Armour with Delivery of Strv 123A Leopard Tank Variant

Sweden has marked a milestone in its modernisation efforts with the delivery of the first Strv 123A main battle tank, a variant of the Leopard 2A5. The Strv 123A is part of a larger plan to acquire 110 such tanks by 2030.

According to recent announcements, the Strv 123A is a digitalised variant of the Strv 122, the Swedish designation for the Leopard 2A5. This upgraded tank features digital communication systems, allowing for improved command and control capabilities. The Strv 123A upgrade is expected to enhance the overall effectiveness of the Swedish Army’s armoured units.

In addition to the delivery of the Strv 123A, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has ordered 44 newly built Strv 123B tanks to be delivered by next year. Based on the upgraded Leopard 2A8 platform, the Strv 123B represents a more recent upgrade path for Sweden’s Leopard fleet. The Leopard 2A8 is equipped with a number of enhancements including improved armour and a more capable fire control system, setting it apart from its predecessor, the Leopard 2A5.

The deliveries of the Strv 123A and Strv 123B mark the beginning of a significant upgrade of the Swedish armour fleet. While the FMV has not announced a comprehensive modernisation program, these latest developments suggest that Sweden is focused on bringing its armour capabilities in line with modern standards. The upgrade of the Leopard fleet with new tanks will help the Swedish Army maintain a competitive edge on the European battlefield.

The delivery of the Strv 123A also coincides with Sweden’s continued efforts to reinforce its military presence in the Baltic region. As tensions between Western powers and Russia continue to escalate, Sweden’s decision to bolster its armour capabilities sends a strong message about the country’s commitment to its defence.

According to the FMV, the delivery of the Strv 123B tanks is expected to be completed by 2027. The agency has reportedly scheduled multiple batches to ensure that the deliveries meet the required standards. The FMV’s focus on modernisation reflects the Swedish government’s commitment to upgrading its defence capabilities in light of increasing tensions. As the modernisation of the Strv fleet gets underway, it is clear that Sweden is serious about meeting the challenges of the future.
