A report released by the United Nations, following a comprehensive inquiry into the treatment of Palestinian children by Israeli authorities and security forces, has once again exposed grave human rights abuses and war crimes in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. The 300-page inquiry, conducted by the UN’s Children and Armed Conflict (CAAC) Office and supported by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, has identified clear evidence of deliberate targeting of Palestinian minors by Israeli forces, leading to crimes against humanity, war crimes, and genocide.
According to the inquiry, numerous cases of Palestinian children being injured, killed, or detained by Israeli security forces have been documented. The report highlights that many children were accused of throwing stones or Molotov cocktails, yet when questioned, provided no evidence of having done so. Furthermore, the report details an instance where a 12-year-old boy with cerebral palsy was severely beaten by Israeli soldiers.
Eyewitness testimony from multiple Palestinians attests to the inhumane treatment meted out to children, including physical and psychological torture. These claims were corroborated with video footage and eyewitness accounts from international human rights organizations.
The inquiry also found Israeli authorities to be responsible for demolishing homes in predominantly Palestinian areas, displacing families and rendering children homeless. These incidents often occur under the guise of purported military security operations, leaving behind destroyed buildings and families without a means to live a life in any semblance of dignity.
Critics of the Israeli government’s actions have long accused security forces of targeting Palestinian civilians, including children. Israeli government officials have repeatedly rebuffed claims of wrongdoing, stating their security operations as necessary measures to maintain order and protect civilians in areas experiencing high levels of violence.
Human Rights Watch Director, Sarah Leah Whitson, responded to the UN inquiry by stating, “The repeated findings of international bodies, such as those by the UN and Human Rights organizations, serve as stark reminders of the urgent need for accountability and an end to impunity for Israeli security forces.”
The UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated: ‘It is unacceptable that in 2023 we see yet another report detailing such heinous crimes.’ He also called upon all parties concerned to adhere to international human rights and international humanitarian law to ensure the protection and safeguarding of children caught up in conflict.
