US and UK Trident SLBM Tube Procurement Reaches Milestone Despite Uncertainty Surrounding Nuclear Arms Race

A significant development in the realms of nuclear deterrence has been recorded as the UK’s Babcock International Group announced the completion of a critical component for the respective submarine fleets of the United States and the United Kingdom. As of March 31st, 2023, Babcock successfully delivered 12 Trident Sub-Launched Ballistic Missile lunch tubes for both the US Columbia-class and UK Dreadnought-class Ballistic Missile Submarines (SSBNs).

Details regarding the delivery stipulated that Babcock provided six 4-tube units for the US Columbia-class SSBNs and six for the UK Dreadnought-class, bringing the total number of completed assemblies to twelve. Further clarification indicates that the Dreadnought-class will be equipped with three 4-tube assemblies, whereas the Columbia-class will feature four 4-tube units.

The Columbia-class SSBNs are a part of the US Navy’s New Entrant Ballistic Missile Submarines (NEBBM), aimed at bolstering the country’s nuclear strike capabilities. Meanwhile, the Dreadnought-class is a critical component of the UK’s nuclear arsenal, designed to ensure deterrence against emerging threats. Each of these vessels can carry up to 16 Trident II D5 Ballistic Missiles, equipped with multiple warheads.

This development aligns with ongoing efforts to maintain the United Kingdom’s submarine-based nuclear deterrent. As part of these endeavours, Babcock has secured significant contracts to support the UK’s Dreadnought-class and Vanguard-class submarines, emphasizing the company’s expertise in the field of submarine nuclear reactors and submarine systems integration.
