Denmark has made a significant military contribution to Ukraine’s ongoing defense efforts by delivering 15,000 long-range 155 mm artillery shells. This substantial shipment is aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s artillery capabilities in its bid to repel ongoing Russian attacks.
Artillery shells have been a crucial aspect of the conflict, with Western allies providing Ukraine with various types of ammunition. However, the majority of these rounds have been limited in their range, typically allowing Ukrainian artillery to engage targets within a 18-24 km radius, depending on barrel length and charge. This has posed challenges for Ukrainian forces operating in deep positions.
The primary drawback to these limited-range shells lies in the grey zone’s vastness. The grey zone, essentially a ‘no man’s land’ area of approximately 25 kilometers in width, can act as a formidable barrier to advancing forces and can leave artillery units unable to engage targets beyond a certain distance.
The newly supplied 155 mm artillery shells, however, offer Ukrainian forces considerably more flexibility. Designed to reach distances of 30-40 kilometers, these rounds significantly close the gap for artillery units, enabling them to effectively engage targets within the grey zone and beyond.
The shipment of long-range artillery shells has the potential to give Ukraine’s military a decisive advantage on the battlefield. The ability to hit targets at greater distances without incurring the risks of friendly fire, advancing troops, or leaving forces in vulnerable positions can be the tipping point in a fight where control of terrain and range is paramount.
It remains to be seen whether this enhanced artillery capability will prove sufficient in countering the full might of Russian artillery, a force which has shown considerable power throughout this conflict. Nonetheless, the long-range 155 mm shells delivered by Denmark undoubtedly mark a welcome boost for Ukrainian forces.
Denmark’s recent military aid to Ukraine reflects the nation’s continued commitment to supporting the country in its efforts to defend against Russian aggression. This strategic move can be seen as part of Denmark’s broader commitment to bolstering NATO defenses in the region.
Denmark is the latest among many nations to supply Ukraine with essential munitions and military equipment, as international pressure mounts on Russia to end its aggression in the region.
