Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz escalated on Monday as a merchant ship sailed through a newly designated route by the Omani authorities, only to be struck by a projectile, sources confirmed. The incident highlights the ongoing dispute between Oman and Iran over the approved navigation channels in the strategic waterway.
According to eyewitnesses, the affected vessel was identified as the “MV Golden Horizon,” a Panamanian-flagged cargo ship. The cargo ship had opted to take the Oman-designated route, specifically Channel 13, which diverges from the traditionally used Iranian-approved Channel 3. The reason behind this decision remains unclear; however, reports suggest that the crew may have been attempting to avoid reported mine clearance issues in the Iranian corridor.
This incident occurred just hours after the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a stern warning to seafarers, cautioning them against using unauthorized routes in the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC’s statement underscored the risks of navigating through unapproved channels, citing recent incidents and potential security threats.
Several shipping companies and vessels reportedly heeded the warning and altered their routes to adhere to the Iranian-approved Channel 3. Nevertheless, the MV Golden Horizon chose to proceed along the Oman-designated Channel 13, where the projectile struck the vessel. Although no fatalities or serious injuries were reported, the incident led to significant damage to the cargo ship’s hull.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical chokepoint for the global energy trade, with around 20% of the world’s oil exports passing through the narrow waterway. The ongoing dispute between Oman and Iran over navigation channels has raised concerns among shipping companies and regional authorities, who fear that escalating tensions could lead to further security threats to mariners.
Oman’s Ministry of Transportation and Communications has refused to comment on the specific route chosen by the MV Golden Horizon. However, in a statement, the ministry emphasized the importance of adhering to the designated navigation channels to ensure the safety of all vessels transiting the Strait. On the other hand, the Iranian Foreign Ministry maintained its stance that Channel 3 remains the safest and most secure route for maritime traffic.
The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the Strait of Hormuz. As tensions between Oman and Iran continue to simmer, mariners will need to remain vigilant and adhere to the designated navigation channels to ensure their safety and the smooth flow of global trade.
