BEIRUT, Lebanon – In a bold move to counter what Israel’s military deems a growing threat, the Israel Air Force conducted a series of airstrikes against Hezbollah targets in the southern Lebanese town of Beit Yahoun.
The precision strikes, which took place in the early hours of the evening on Tuesday, resulted in significant damage to several buildings and infrastructure within the town. The Israeli military released a statement confirming the operation, citing “numerous intelligence gathering efforts” that had revealed Hezbollah’s presence in the area.
“It is our duty to protect Israeli citizens from the scourge of terrorism and to safeguard their security interests,” Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson, Ronny Daniel, stated. “We will continue to target and dismantle these terrorist cells, no matter the cost or location.”
Local residents of Beit Yahoun and nearby areas reported hearing multiple explosions as Israeli aircraft made their way over the region, unleashing a barrage of precision-guided munitions against suspected Hezbollah targets. Witnesses described scenes of devastation and panic, with many fleeing the area to avoid harm.
“It was terrifying, I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing,” said Amira Hassan, a resident of Beit Yahoun. “The explosions were loud, and the shockwave forced me to seek cover. I pray for the safety of everyone involved.”
Hezbollah has yet to release an official statement on the airstrikes, but sources close to the organization have confirmed that several of its members were either injured or killed in the operation. The group’s Secretary-General, Hassan Nasrallah, has condemned previous Israeli strikes against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, branding them “act[s] of aggression.”
Regional tensions have remained high since the Israeli operation, with Lebanon’s Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, urging restraint from all parties involved. “We condemn any aggression from whichever side and call on international bodies to intervene,” Mikati stated.
The Israeli government has consistently maintained that it has the right to protect its citizens from any perceived threats emanating from southern Lebanon. As a response, Hezbollah has vowed to continue its military campaign against Israel, vowing to avenge the blood of its fighters and resist Israeli occupation.
The airstrikes bring to the forefront the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, a longstanding feud rooted in Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000. The volatile region has seen periods of relative calm punctuated by violent outbreaks of violence.
