Beirut, Lebanon – Lebanese President Michel Aoun announced that his administration welcomes efforts from the international community to form a coalition that will oversee a security mechanism in post-United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) phases in southern Lebanon.
Speaking in a press conference at the Presidential Palace, the President commended the international community’s engagement. He expressed Lebanon’s readiness to adopt an international framework that would enhance the capabilities of its armed forces and prevent the country from becoming embroiled in regional rivalries or conflicts.
The Lebanese President stated, “We welcome efforts made towards forming an international coalition for a security mechanism in the post-UNIFIL era.” He underscored that his administration is open to working with any international framework that strengthens the Lebanese Armed Forces and maintains regional stability.
UNIFIL’s mandate, which was established in 1978, expires in June 2026. The international force’s mission is to maintain peace and security in southern Lebanon, alongside its border with Israel. However, with the upcoming expiry of UNIFIL’s mandate, countries are looking at alternatives to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region.
President Aoun stressed that the primary goal of Lebanon’s policy in the coming period is the consolidation of national sovereignty and the prevention of any security vacuum in the country. He reiterated Lebanon’s commitment to peace and regional stability.
This development marks a crucial juncture in Lebanon’s relations with the international community, particularly in the wake of rising tensions in the region. As the international community explores the post-UNIFIL phase, Lebanon is working to solidify its position as an independent sovereign state.
Lebanon has long sought enhanced security cooperation with the international community, in an effort to strengthen its military capabilities. The country has been working on bolstering its military capacity through international partnership and training. An international security coalition, bolstered by the international community’s support, could further empower Lebanon to address existing security challenges and mitigate regional rivalry threats.
The UNIFIL mandate review comes at a sensitive time for the region, amidst a backdrop of escalating regional tensions and conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia. An internationally led security mechanism in southern Lebanon could serve as a deterrent against military aggression and promote peace and cooperation among regional states.
The upcoming period will be a crucial gauge of regional cooperation and commitment to peace in the region. The Lebanese government views collaboration with the international community as a key factor in the security of its country.
