SOFIA, BULGARIA – In a significant move to bolster its national defense capabilities, the Bulgarian government has announced a multi-million euro contract with the French-based defense electronics company Thales. Under the agreement, Thales will supply seven Ground Master 400A surveillance radars to the Bulgarian military, backed by a €195 million loan from the European Union’s SAFE (Sustainable and Integrated Guarantee) financing program.
Scheduled for delivery by 2030, the cutting-edge Ground Master 400A radars will significantly enhance Bulgaria’s ability to monitor and track airborne and ground targets. The new system will feature advanced electronic surveillance capabilities, facilitating enhanced situational awareness and improved command and control for military operations. Thales will be responsible for the design, manufacturing, and delivery of the radar systems, while also providing training and technical support to Bulgarian military personnel.
The €195 million funding package marks a major investment in the country’s defense sector and underlines the EU’s commitment to strengthening its member states’ security capabilities. The SAFE program enables participating countries to access affordable financing for major defense acquisitions, fostering cooperation between European nations and promoting a more integrated security framework.
Commenting on the contract, Bulgaria’s government officials highlighted the strategic importance of the Ground Master 400A system in bolstering national defense and enhancing interoperability with NATO allies. The deal is seen as a significant step towards modernizing Bulgaria’s air defense infrastructure, which will contribute to the country’s participation in regional defense efforts and reinforce its role in the European security landscape.
Thales has established itself as a leading provider of defense electronics and surveillance systems across Europe and globally. The company’s advanced Ground Master 400A radar has been in service with various military forces since 2017, demonstrating its capabilities and reliability in real-world operational environments.
As part of the agreement, Thales will be responsible for integrating the Ground Master 400A system with Bulgaria’s existing military command and control structures. This will facilitate seamless coordination between existing defense systems and ensure a high level of interoperability between Bulgarian and NATO forces.
The delivery of the Ground Master 400A radars is set to begin in 2027, with the system expected to be fully operational by 2030. As Bulgaria continues to strengthen its defense capabilities, the contract with Thales signifies a significant development in the country’s efforts to maintain its national security and contribute to the collective defense of Europe.
