Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant Launch Operations Begin Amid Challenges

MOSCOW, June 25 (Interfax) – Russia’s state-owned nuclear corporation Rosatom announced that it has initiated startup operations at the first unit of Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant in Türkiye. The long-awaited milestone marks a significant achievement for the project that Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev described as having faced “major implementation challenges”.

Located in the Mediterranean coastal province of Mersin, Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant is the first nuclear power plant to be constructed in Türkiye. The project has drawn intense international attention due to its strategic implications and high stakes. However, according to Likhachev, the project’s path to completion was fraught with difficulties that would have deterred most vendors.

During a press briefing, the Director General expressed surprise that any vendor would have continued investment in the Akkuyu project, given the challenges that Rosatom itself faced. Likhachev emphasized that his organization’s perseverance paid off, with the successful launch of Unit 1 marking a major breakthrough for the project.

Rosatom had begun construction of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant in 2018, with the ambitious plan to complete it within a timeframe of around 12 years. The project involved the installation of four nuclear power units at the site, each with a capacity of 1,200 MW of electricity generation. The successful launch of Unit 1 is a testament to Rosatom’s commitment to meeting its promises and bringing the project to fruition.

The launch of Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant marks a new chapter in energy cooperation between Russia and Türkiye. The plant is expected to improve energy security for both countries, as well as provide a significant boost to Türkiye’s power generation capacity. However, the development comes amidst heightened tensions between Russia and the West, which have led to sanctions and other restrictive measures against Russian entities involved in international projects.

Regardless of the geopolitical climate, the successful completion of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant remains a notable achievement for Rosatom, marking another milestone in its long history of constructing and operating nuclear power plants worldwide. The launch of Unit 1 at Akkuyu is expected to pave the way for subsequent units to come online, ultimately cementing Russia’s position as a leading player in the global nuclear energy sector.

It remains to be seen whether the launch of Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant will alleviate concerns about its safety and environmental impact, but the achievement represents a significant step forward in advancing Russia’s nuclear energy ambitions.
