The Trump administration’s immigration policies have been a subject of debate and controversy, with critics accusing the outgoing government of adopting a more aggressive stance towards undocumented immigrants. In a move aimed at countering criticisms of the Trump era’s immigration record, officials have released figures they claim demonstrate a significant disparity in the number of individuals removed from the country under the Trump and Obama administrations.
The data, according to Trump officials, shows that the number of individuals removed by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is significantly higher during the Trump era. Specifically, they argue that the Trump administration removed hundreds of thousands of individuals who were not apprehended at the border, a distinction that does not apply to the Obama era.
According to the figures provided by Trump officials, the Obama administration removed around 300,000 individuals who had been apprehended at or near the border. In contrast, the Trump administration claimed to have removed over 500,000 individuals who had similarly been apprehended. This 67% increase, according to Trump officials, would not include the hundreds of thousands of additional individuals removed under the Trump administration who had not been apprehended at the border.
However, immigration experts and advocates have disputed these figures, suggesting that the Trump administration is attempting to manipulate the numbers to justify its own more aggressive immigration policies. “This is a clear attempt to distort the record and cherry-pick data that supports the Trump administration’s narrative,” said one immigrant rights advocate.
Others have pointed out that the Obama administration’s removal numbers include individuals who were detained and deported, but also those who were allowed to depart the country voluntarily. In contrast, the Trump administration’s figures appear to only include those who were forcibly removed.
While the debate over the numbers continues, one thing is clear: the Trump administration’s immigration policies have resulted in a significant increase in the number of deportations and removals. Whether this is a genuine attempt to improve border security or a cynical effort to score electoral points, the reality on the ground remains the same: a heightened sense of insecurity and fear among communities of color and immigrant families.
