GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – An Israeli airstrike targeted a vehicle in the central Gaza Strip on Thursday evening, resulting in the deaths of three Palestinian individuals and leaving several others wounded, according to reports by local sources.
Eyewitnesses reported that the Israeli aircraft struck the vehicle in the Al-Maghazi refugee camp in the midst of evening prayers, causing a massive explosion that left the surrounding area severely damaged. The incident occurred around 9 pm local time.
Al Jazeera, a prominent Qatari-based news outlet, reported the attack based on the witness account of a local man who claimed that several vehicles caught fire following the airstrike. The man, who wished to remain anonymous for security reasons, stated that the vehicle targeted was not clearly identifiable and seemed to have been struck without warning.
The incident in Al-Maghazi has brought to six the number of Palestinian fatalities documented in Gaza in the past 48 hours. While the reason behind the Israeli airstrike and the identity of the vehicle occupants are still unknown, Al Jazeera reported that the strike occurred amid heightened tensions between Israel and Hamas, the Islamist militant group controlling Gaza since 2007.
Israeli military officials have yet to comment publicly on the airstrike, fueling suspicions that the attack may be part of a broader Israeli campaign to curb militant group activities in the Gaza Strip. Local sources indicated that the military action appears to be focused on the southern and eastern regions of the coastal enclave.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of destruction following the airstrike, stating that nearby homes and commercial buildings suffered varying degrees of damage due to the blast. Medical teams were swiftly deployed to the scene to treat the injured and retrieve the bodies of the deceased.
In response to the incident, Palestinian health authorities have reported a significant escalation in casualties and injuries in recent days, with over a dozen individuals killed and dozens more suffering minor or severe injuries as a result of Israeli military actions in the Gaza Strip.
The escalating conflict has raised concerns among human rights groups and the international community regarding the safety and human rights of civilians living in the Gaza Strip, particularly in refugee camps prone to such attacks.
The Israeli military’s policy of airstrikes against targets in Gaza, and the relative lack of transparency in its operations, have long been criticized by human rights groups for their potential to infringe upon civilians’ civil liberties and put lives at risk.
