TEL AVIV, ISRAEL – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has emphasized that Iran has no role in Lebanon, a statement that may be seen as an attempt to mitigate tensions between the two nations. Speaking to local media, Netanyahu highlighted the Israeli government’s strategy to empower the Lebanese army in reclaiming territories.
The move comes amidst growing concerns over the growing influence of Iranian-backed Hezbollah forces in Lebanon. However, Netanyahu assured that the plan to give the Lebanese military a stronger foothold in the region does not compromise Israel’s security. The Israeli Prime Minister claimed that the Lebanese army is set to establish its authority in two key zones – one located outside the security zone, and another north of the Litani River.
During a recent interview, Netanyahu provided more context on the plan. He stated that the zones earmarked for the Lebanese military are entirely within the range of the Israeli army’s reach. The Israeli Prime Minister also noted that Hezbollah is not allowed entry into the designated area, nor is the civilian population in the region. Furthermore, Netanyahu pointed out that the zones do not extend into the areas that Israel has already secured.
Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that this initiative is aimed at bolstering the Lebanese government’s capacity to maintain stability within the country. The move appears to be an attempt by Israel to demonstrate its goodwill towards Lebanon and its people. However, this has been accompanied by criticism that Netanyahu’s administration remains ambivalent on the issue of Iranian influence.
Netanyahu has made no secret of his deep-seated distrust for Iran’s intentions. This mistrust appears to have led to a hardline stance that categorically dismisses any claims of Iranian involvement in Lebanon. Critics argue that this might be at odds with the new initiative that aims to strengthen Lebanon’s military presence.
In an interview with Israel’s public broadcaster, Netanyahu maintained that Iran has zero stake in the affairs of Lebanon. He also stated that Israel will continue to maintain its existing security zone, ensuring that any territorial gains by the Lebanese military do not jeopardize Israeli national security.
