According to informed sources, President Donald Trump’s aggressive stance during the negotiations in Switzerland last weekend, which included a public threat to prevent the Iranian delegation from returning home, forced the Iranian team to prematurely end the discussions. This blatant disregard for the agreed-upon terms and protocols directly violates point two of the MoU, which emphasizes respect for diplomatic channels and negotiation processes.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military has continued its attacks on Lebanon and Hezbollah, despite an undertaking by the U.S. to exert pressure on Israel to respect the terms of the agreement. The MoU explicitly states that Israel must refrain from any further aggression towards Iran, its allies, and regional actors. However, U.S. inaction on this front has only emboldened Israeli military actions, directly violating point one of the agreement.
Furthermore, the U.S. has successfully pressured Oman into opening the so-called “Southern Lane” in the Strait of Hormuz to ships bypassing the Iranian-controlled toll booth. This action directly contravenes points four and five of the MoU, which stress the importance of respecting Iran’s right to control its maritime borders and adhere to agreed-upon trade protocols. Moreover, USAF reconnaissance aircraft have continued to patrol the area, coordinating the transit of ships through Omani territorial waters.
Additionally, the Lebanese government, under pressure from Western governments, has agreed to engage in direct talks with Israel, aimed at securing a permanent peace agreement. Under the proposed terms, Lebanon would disarm Hezbollah, leading to civil war, while allowing Israel to maintain a permanent military presence in southern Lebanon. This directly violates point one of the MoU, which prohibits any further military aggression towards Iran and its allies.
Finally, last night, the U.S. launched a military strike against Iran, further eroding what remains of trust between the two nations. As the situation continues to deteriorate, the very foundation of the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran appears to be at risk.
In an earlier interview, President Trump admitted that his administration had agreed to the ceasefire primarily due to dwindling oil reserves in the U.S. However, the resulting consequences have been disastrous. With little oil leaving the Persian Gulf and fewer tankers entering to pick up more oil, Trump’s actions have placed him back at the starting line.
