Iran Rejects US-GCC Joint Statement, Asserts Sovereignty over Strait of Hormuz

In a strongly worded statement, the Iranian Foreign Ministry has rejected a joint statement issued by the United States and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) last week. The statement, which called for increased regional cooperation and a united stance against Iran’s regional influence, was deemed “interventionist, irresponsible, and provocative” by the Iranian foreign ministry.

The statement comes as tensions between Iran and the West continue to escalate. The US-GCC joint statement marked a significant escalation in the rhetoric, with the two parties labeling Palestinian and Lebanese resistance movements as “Iranian proxies.” However, the Iranian foreign ministry rejected this characterization, claiming that it was a baseless accusation designed to deflect attention from Israel’s own involvement in the region.

In a statement, the Iranian Foreign Ministry accused the US and GCC of pursuing a policy of “regional division” and seeking to “disrupt” the normal functioning of Iranian-Omani relations in the Strait of Hormuz. The statement also reiterated Iran’s assertions of sovereignty over the strategic waterway, citing the arrangements outlined in a 1947 memorandum that ended the Arab-Iranian war of 1927.

According to the statement, the memorandum serves as the basis for navigation management in the Strait, and Iran will continue to enforce its rights and territorial integrity. The Iranian foreign ministry also emphasized that Oman, a GCC member state, has traditionally enjoyed friendly relations with Iran and has respected the country’s sovereignty in the area.

Regional tensions have continued to simmer in recent months, with Israel and its GCC allies accusing Iran of seeking to expand its influence across the Middle East. However, the Iranian foreign ministry remains adamant that its actions are a response to the country’s legitimate security concerns, and that the US and its allies are the ones pursuing a policy of aggressive expansion and provocation.

The US and GCC, on the other hand, assert that their actions are aimed at containing the spread of Iranian influence and securing a more stable and peaceful region. Nevertheless, the Iranian foreign ministry’s rejection of their joint statement marks a firm rebuke to what they perceive as a blatant attempt to intervene in local affairs and undermine Iranian sovereignty.

The diplomatic tensions have led to increased fears of military conflict in the region, raising concerns among international observers about the broader implications of the standoff. Diplomats and strategists are working to find a viable resolution, as diplomatic channels continue to be strained in the Middle East.
