A disturbing trend has caught the attention of international travelers following a peculiar set of circumstances on recent flights to Turkey. Many have expressed concern that the events unfolding on these trips mirror a series of disruptions previously experienced on flights in Turkey.
“It’s horrible. We literally had a very similar experience in Turkey,” shared Sarah Jenkins, a tourist from Los Angeles who recently took a flight from Los Angeles International Airport to Istanbul. Jenkins and her travel companions described the near-identical events of engine malfunction, delayed takeoff, and eventually, a sudden loss of cabin pressure during the flight. Although their flight was headed towards Turkey, the disruptions did not occur upon arrival but instead occurred roughly halfway through the journey.
Jenkins’ account has sparked similar recollections from numerous other passengers who have shared accounts of similar disruptions on flights from and to Turkey. The reports from passengers suggest a pattern of issues affecting flights in and out of the country.
In a statement, Turkish Airlines, which operates multiple direct flights between Turkish cities and many major hubs, attributed the disruptions to unforeseen maintenance issues and unexpected inclement weather conditions that can sometimes impede flight operations.
While many in the industry have dismissed such claims, the string of similarities is still causing concern. The incidents described by travelers such as Jenkins bear striking resemblance to disruptions reported a year ago by passengers on Turkey-bound flights within the United States.
“It’s not a coincidence,” commented passenger and travel agent Emily Brown. “If we look at these incidents in aggregate, it’s clear there is some systematic issue going on. We’re demanding more transparency and answers from the airlines and regulatory bodies.”
Regulators and aviation officials have yet to comment on the situation or make any public statements regarding the potential relationship between these incidents. Meanwhile, passengers and travel industry insiders have called for increased oversight and transparency in the wake of disturbing incidents like those experienced by Sarah Jenkins on her most recent flight to Turkey.
