Estonian Internet Users Favour Improved Online Platform

TALLINN, ESTONIA – A recent survey conducted in Estonia has revealed that a significant majority of internet users favour improvements to the country’s online portal, the Veebileht. The findings of the study, which polled 1,500 Estonian citizens, indicate a pressing need for updates to the platform, which has been in operation since 1999.

The research, commissioned by the Estonian Government Information Authority, found that nearly 75% of respondents felt that the Veebileht is essential for accessing essential public services, including government information, healthcare services, and education resources. However, the vast majority of users (83%) expressed dissatisfaction with the current user interface and navigation of the online portal.

According to the survey results, the main criticisms of the Veebileht centre on its outdated design, which many users find difficult to use on mobile devices and computers. Furthermore, the site’s search functionality has been repeatedly cited as one of the biggest shortcomings, with nearly 60% of respondents stating that they often find it challenging to locate the information they need.

In light of these findings, the Estonian Government Information Authority has announced plans to revamp the Veebileht, promising significant improvements to user experience and functionality. The proposed updates include a modernized design tailored to meet the needs of mobile users, improved search functionality, and enhanced multilingual support.

Experts in digital governance stress that improving the Veebileht will not only enhance citizens’ engagement with the online platform but also boost Estonia’s international reputation as a leader in e-government. In recent years, Estonia has consistently ranked high in various international rankings assessing the digital readiness of countries.

“The Veebileht is an essential tool for Estonia’s digital development,” noted Andra Veide, Head of Digital Governance at the Estonian Government Information Authority. “We are committed to delivering a high-quality, user-friendly online experience that meets the needs of all Estonian citizens, regardless of their age, language proficiency, or location.”

Construction on the improved platform is expected to begin shortly, with the aim of completing the first phase by the end of the year. As the Estonian government prepares to unveil its revamped Veebileht, citizens and international observers alike will be watching with interest to see whether the online portal can live up to its promise of becoming a model for effective digital governance.

While a number of technical hurdles lie ahead, the consensus within the Estonian digital community is that the updates are long overdue. The proposed revamp has the potential to breathe renewed life into the Veebileht, fostering greater digital inclusion and strengthening Estonia’s foothold in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
