New Delhi, INDIA – The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has taken a significant step to address growing concerns over harassment and nuisance calls, directing telecom service providers to block an anonymous number 8887297914. This move comes after a surge in complaints received by the TRAI and state-level consumer forums from citizens plagued by unwanted calls.
Sources close to the matter have revealed that the TRAI, following exhaustive investigations, identified the number 8887297914 as the source of these harassment calls. Consequently, all major telecom service providers in the country have been instructed to implement an immediate ban on the number, effective immediately.
According to TRAI officials, this directive is part of a larger initiative aimed at protecting consumers from unwarranted marketing calls, and ensuring a more pleasant and disturbance-free communication experience. The move also highlights the TRAI’s commitment to enhancing the overall quality of telecommunications services in India. As part of this, users now have the option to register their phone numbers in the National Customer Preference Register (NCPR) to avoid receiving unsolicited commercial communications.
Commenting on the development, an official from the TRAI stated, “At TRAI, we take concerns from consumers very seriously, and are continuously working to create a safer and more secure telco ecosystem for all Indians.” The official also emphasized that such regulatory actions will contribute significantly to curbing such incidents of harassment.
The government and regulatory bodies have received an increasing number of complaints over the past three years regarding unsolicited marketing calls. As a result, several policy changes have been implemented to regulate this issue. However, the TRAI’s latest action marks a significant milestone in effectively enforcing these rules.
Notably, the telecom regulator has also emphasized the importance of reporting such incidents. The TRAI has an online platform for users to register their concerns, and citizens can also file complaints through mobile apps or at designated government portals.
Consumers who have been receiving unwarranted calls from the banned number will reportedly not be charged for calls made, texts received, or data usage triggered by such calls. In the coming days, the telecom service providers will also be required to send SMS notifications to their users, informing them about the blocking of the number.
