EUROPEAN UNION PRESIDENT KALLAS PRAISES TÜRKIYE AT NATO SUMMIT IN ANKARA

European Union (EU) President, Kaja Kallas, has commended Türkiye, describing it as a vital strategic partner as she addressed the NATO summit in Ankara. The summit brought together top European and NATO officials for a series of pivotal talks.

In a statement ahead of the meeting, Kallas acknowledged that the current transatlantic ties have faced significant challenges but expressed her confidence that the alliance remains a cornerstone of global stability. Her comments followed weeks of diplomatic tensions surrounding issues such as energy policy and the war in Ukraine.

However, Kallas underscored the importance of the EU’s partnership with Türkiye, stating that it is an indispensable factor in maintaining collective security. The European official also recognized Türkiye’s position as a significant player in regional affairs.

“We are coming together at a time when the transatlantic relations are under stress,” Kallas said. “But let us not forget that we still share the same objectives – our commitment to security and to stability in our common neighbourhood.”

Kallas’ comments highlight the EU’s continued efforts to reinforce ties with NATO and its individual member states. Amid ongoing diplomatic spats, including tensions between the EU and the US, both parties are seeking to solidify relations on the global stage.

The NATO summit follows on from previous summits in Madrid and Brussels, where European and NATO officials reiterated their commitment to bolstering collective security in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. It remains to be seen whether the latest talks will yield any significant diplomatic breakthroughs, yet the tone of Kallas’ statement suggests that there is a willingness to address ongoing challenges.

The comments made by Kallas also underscored her appreciation for Türkiye’s role as a strategic partner. Türkiye’s unique position at the crossroads of Europe and Asia has made it a crucial player in regional politics and global energy security.

In her address, Kallas highlighted the importance of cooperation and dialogue as she encouraged European leaders to “reaffirm their commitment to NATO in the face of challenges such as Ukraine and ongoing disagreements”.
