CAIRO, Saudi Arabia – Yemen’s armed forces have achieved significant progress in their operational and administrative reorganisation since the 2022 truce, the country’s top military officer said in a statement. Lieutenant General Sagheer bin Aziz, the Chief of Staff of the Yemeni Army, made the announcement in a rare public address, highlighting the military’s restructuring efforts and modernisation drive.
According to Bin Aziz, the army has completed approximately 80% of the restructuring process, aimed at transforming the country’s military into a more cohesive and efficient force. The general said that military command has been unified, and all formations are now being brought under the defence ministry and the general staff.
Bin Aziz also provided insight into the Yemeni forces’ military capabilities, confirming that they possess a range of advanced technologies, including drones, ballistic missiles, and electronic warfare systems. The nation’s military has also established specialised units in these fields, enabling them to exploit the advantages offered by these technologies.
The Yemeni Army Chief of Staff underscored the importance of a balanced military approach, stressing that while technology plays a significant role in modern warfare, ground troops remain essential for holding territory and securing strategic objectives. This approach reflects the recognition that conventional military tactics continue to play a crucial role in combat operations, despite advances in technology.
The announcement by General Sagheer bin Aziz comes as Yemen continues its recovery efforts after years of conflict. The Yemeni government and Houthi rebels signed a 2022 armistice agreement, which has helped to establish a fragile peace framework. However, concerns remain about the security situation in the region, and the potential for renewed violence remains a pressing concern.
Yemen’s military reorganisation efforts have received support from regional allies, who have provided significant assistance in terms of training, equipment, and financial aid. These efforts are aimed at bolstering the country’s military capabilities and enabling it to counter the threat posed by the Houthi militia.
The statement by General bin Aziz highlights the Yemeni Army’s commitment to modernisation and its recognition of the importance of adapting to changing combat realities. As the conflict in Yemen continues to unfold, the Yemeni military’s progress in restructuring its forces will be closely watched by regional and international observers.
