In a stark warning to those implicated in the endemic corruption that has long plagued Iraq, Prime Minister Al-Zaidi has declared that the fight against corruption has become ‘irreversible’. The bold stance was revealed in an exclusive interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, in which he labelled corruption as a ‘threat to the very existence of the Iraqi state’.
The commitment to tackle the entrenched corruption in the country was underscored by Al-Zaidi’s determination to rid the nation of the entrenched culture of impunity. He proclaimed that under his government, there would be ‘no place for corruption, no place for weapons outside the state’, indicating a renewed resolve to consolidate state control and authority.
At the core of the Prime Minister’s strategy is a forthcoming National Sovereignty Conference, which is set to be convened by the end of the year. The landmark conference aims to reassert the state’s monopoly on the use of force, thereby bolstering its capacity to enforce effective governance. Critics argue that this could potentially exacerbate existing tensions between the government and various armed groups, however, supporters view it as a necessary step towards establishing order.
Furthermore, the government is actively pursuing those alleged to have embezzled public funds. Al-Zaidi revealed plans to offer leniency to individuals who voluntary return the stolen monies, providing them with the option of legal settlements. Conversely, those who resist the call to account will face severe legal consequences.
In a remarkable display of personal commitment, the Prime Minister declared that he had taken a vow of personal austerity, eschewing the privileges typically accorded to senior officials. Notably, he refused even the basic perks afforded to his position, stating that he would not accept a salary, benefits, or gifts. The self-imposed restraint extends to the most mundane of matters, as he even declined to accept a necktie from anyone, thereby reinforcing his dedication to upholding the highest standards of integrity and public service.
