US CENTCOM Commander Meets Lebanese President to Strengthen Cooperation

Washington, D.C. – In a significant move to bolster bilateral cooperation, Lieutenant General (LTG) Brad Cooper, Commander of the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), has concluded a series of high-level meetings in Beirut, Lebanon. During his visit, Cooper had an extraordinary encounter with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, where he reaffirmed US commitment to supporting stability and security in the region.

Cooper’s visit served as a pivotal moment in the ongoing discussions surrounding the implementation of the Israel-Lebanon framework agreement. The agreement, reached in October 2022, marked a significant step forward in de-escalating long-standing tensions between the two nations. The US has been playing a pivotal role in brokering the agreement, recognizing its potential to foster regional peace and stability.

The meeting between Cooper and President Aoun provided an opportune occasion for both parties to discuss the intricacies of the agreement and chart a path forward. By engaging in open dialogue, they sought to address shared concerns and identify areas for enhanced US-Lebanon cooperation. A senior State Department official, speaking on condition of anonymity, emphasized, “The United States remains committed to supporting Lebanon’s stability and prosperity. Our partnership with Lebanon is built on a foundation of mutual respect and trust, and we will continue to work together to address regional challenges.”

Throughout his visit, Cooper also met with Lebanese military authorities and other high-ranking officials to discuss ways to bolster defense cooperation. CENTCOM has been playing an active role in providing training and capacity-building support to the Lebanese Armed Forces, recognizing the critical importance of a robust military in countering regional threats.

The US continues to maintain a strong interest in Lebanon, driven by a shared desire to promote stability, security, and economic prosperity in the region. As regional dynamics evolve, US-Lebanon cooperation will remain a key component in the pursuit of these objectives.
