Tehran, Iran – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized today that the implementation of the agreement between Iran and the United States hinges on a commitment from both parties. Speaking at a press conference in Tehran, the Iranian leader outlined his government’s approach to negotiations with the US, stating that “mutual understanding is a two-way street” and that American adherence to the agreement is essential.
Iranian President Pezeshkian’s remarks came amid ongoing tensions between the two nations, which have been marked by a series of provocative statements and actions from both sides. In an apparent reference to US President Joe Biden’s recent warning to Iran regarding the country’s nuclear program, Pezeshkian stated that “our approach to unreasonable saber-rattling and baseless threats is to rely on rationality and human dignity in decision-making, and to defend decisively and fearlessly when it comes time to act.”
Pezeshkian also touched on the importance of trust and accountability in international relations, reiterating that Iran is committed to fulfilling its obligations under the agreement if the US adheres to its own commitments. “If the American side adheres to the agreement, we will also fulfill our commitments,” the Iranian President declared.
The comments come as negotiations between Iran and the US over the nuclear deal, which was signed in 2015 but has been under strain since the Trump administration withdrew from the agreement in 2018, have resumed following a months-long hiatus. The deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), aimed to limit Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions.
Critics of the agreement have expressed concerns about its effectiveness in preventing Iran’s development of nuclear capabilities, while proponents argue that it has successfully slowed the country’s nuclear program and has enabled Iran to increase its diplomatic and economic ties with the international community.
Iranian President Pezeshkian’s comments suggest that his government remains committed to the agreement, but is wary of US intentions and actions. The remarks also highlight the challenges ahead for diplomats seeking to revive the deal, as trust and confidence between the two nations is seen as a crucial prerequisite for its successful implementation.
