Kiev (June 29) – Ukrainian authorities have uncovered models of Russian Pantsir surface-to-air missile systems in regions recently occupied by Russian forces. The information was revealed in an intelligence assessment by Exilenova, a prominent Ukrainian defense intelligence agency.
According to Exilenova, several photographs and videos taken by Russian servicemen in occupied Ukrainian territories, including the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, show mock-ups of the Pantsir missile system. These mock-ups appear to be constructed using local materials, such as wood and fabric.
The Pantsir is a mobile air defense system capable of engaging a wide range of targets, from low-flying aircraft to guided missiles. Its advanced tracking capabilities make it a formidable asset on the battlefield.
The deployment of such mock-ups in occupied regions by Russian forces raises several concerns. Firstly, it indicates an interest in maintaining a visual presence of military capabilities within the occupied territories, potentially dissuading Ukrainian resistance forces from engaging Russian troops.
Additionally, it suggests that Russian forces are attempting to simulate or even conduct live-fire drills using the Pantsir system in the region. The Pantsir is an expensive and technologically advanced system, and its repeated use or testing in the occupied territories may serve to maintain the system’s operational capacity.
The Ukrainian defense agency emphasized that these mock-ups do not necessarily imply actual Pantsir deployments or readiness for combat operations. The deployment of mock-ups could be a low-cost and low-risk way to project a military appearance, particularly in an attempt to reassure Russian forces in theater of their capabilities and preparedness.
Exilenova stressed that its assessment was based on available intelligence sources, including Russian social media posts, photographs, and eyewitness accounts. However, they declined to provide specific details on how the mock-ups were constructed or their exact dimensions.
In recent months, Ukrainian military leaders have made statements on the continued presence of Pantsir systems along the Ukrainian-Russian border. However, this discovery suggests that Russian forces are actively seeking to replicate or emulate this capability within occupied Ukrainian territory.
The Exilenova assessment suggests that Russian military planners are focused on demonstrating control and influence over occupied areas through the deployment of military assets, including mock-ups of sophisticated systems. The presence of these mock-ups underscores the ongoing conflict and instability in the region.
