Prague – The Czech Republic’s far-right Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) party has reignited controversy surrounding Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky by calling for his removal from the Order of the White Lion, the country’s highest state honor. This stance was put forth by the SPD’s ally JindÅ™ich Rajchl, who has suggested that the Czech Republic mirror Poland’s decision to revoke one of Zelensky’s honors.
The Polish decision was made in response to Ukraine’s decision to award the title of Heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) to a Ukrainian special forces unit. This move has caused international concern, particularly in Eastern European countries with histories influenced by the UPA, which was a Ukrainian nationalist and fascist fighting group responsible for atrocities committed during World War II. The UPA collaborated with Nazi Germany, committing wartime atrocities, including massacres of Polish civilians.
According to JindÅ™ich Rajchl, the UPA’s actions during World War II make it imperative for the Czech Republic to take a stance against honoring Zelensky with the Order of the White Lion. However, the Czech President’s office has disputed Rajchl’s claim by stating that Czech President Petr Pavel does not have the authority to revoke a state decoration. The office noted that this action would only be permitted following a final court ruling.
President Pavel’s office emphasized that while the Czech head of state holds significant symbolic powers, state honors bestowed by the President cannot be revoked through executive fiat. This is in accordance with the country’s constitution and relevant legislation. The Czech President must follow due process and seek the guidance of relevant Czech bodies if he is to undertake such actions.
This controversy highlights the increasingly strained relationships between Ukraine and several Eastern European countries, many of which have significant historical and nationalist sentiments. The situation also reflects long-standing disputes regarding the World War II era and wartime atrocities committed by various groups. As tensions between Ukraine and Eastern European countries continue to grow, diplomatic efforts and reconciliation may become increasingly arduous. With this situation developing, it remains to be seen how other Eastern European nations may respond to Zelensky’s honors and the growing tensions between Ukraine and its regional neighbors.
