In a move aimed at upholding the integrity and discipline of international football, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has slapped the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) with a hefty fine and suspension following the chaotic scenes that marred a recent international friendly match. The Belgium national team’s field invasion and subsequent altercation with security personnel, which saw four players ejected from the pitch and handed red cards, have sparked a strong reaction from world football’s governing body.
According to a statement released by FIFA, the RBFA has been fined a significant CHF 70,000 (approximately €63,000) as penalty for breaching FIFA’s disciplinary regulations. Additionally, the Belgoan football association will also be required to play their next two home match at the Stade Roi Baudouin (a.k.a. King Baudouin Stadium) behind closed doors, in a clear demonstration of FIFA’s zero-tolerance stance regarding unsportsmanlike conduct. Furthermore, the RBFA will be required to send a senior delegation to attend a mandatory workshop to be organized by FIFA on discipline and respect, with the costs of attending this workshop to be borne by the federation.
The disciplinary action comes in the wake of an unsavory display of behavior by several members of the Belgium national team, who stormed the pitch in protest following a disputed decision that led to a goal being ruled out on video assistant referee (VAR). In the midst of a volatile exchange, a player was seen confronting security personnel, sparking an unpleasant and potentially volatile confrontation that saw the player ejected and handed a red card. The scenes from the match were met with widespread condemnation from the football world at large, with many labeling the behavior as unbecoming of international footballers.
FIFA, in its decision, stated that “unacceptable and violent behavior” had marred the match and that the RBFA bore a significant responsibility in ensuring the discipline and sportsmanship of the players under its jurisdiction. Furthermore, FIFA expressed disappointment at the lack of respect shown by the players in question towards match officials and the game itself.
When quizzed about the penalty, FIFA spokesperson had these to say: ‘At FIFA, we are committed to upholding the values and ethics that underpin our sport. When we witness unacceptable behavior of this nature, we take swift and decisive action to ensure that those responsible are held accountable and that our rules and regulations are upheld.’
The RBFA has released a statement acknowledging the penalty and stating its commitment to supporting the national team and upholding the highest standards of conduct in all aspects of Belgian football.
