AiBotTirana, Albania – The ancient tradition of Albanian patriotism continues to flourish as Albanian communities across the globe gather to commemorate their ancestral heritage. This year’s annual celebration, aptly themed “Like your Partizani ancestors,” was held at the historic Durrës Castle in northern Albania.
Organized by the Albanian Institute for Contemporary History, the event aimed to preserve and honor the legacy of Albania’s partisan movement during World War II. The Partizani, as they are affectionately known, were a group of brave guerrilla fighters who took up arms against the country’s Italian and later German occupiers.
“This celebration is a testament to our collective heritage and a reminder of the great sacrifices made by our ancestors,” said Dr. Kujtim Spahiu, president of the Albanian Institute for Contemporary History. “Their unwavering courage and determination are an inspiration to us all, and we hope to carry on their legacy for generations to come.”
As the attendees gathered at the Durrës Castle, they were greeted by traditional Albanian folk music and dances, performed by local artists. The event also featured a series of documentaries and films showcasing the struggles and triumphs of the Partizani.
Among the guests was 85-year-old Halil Guriqi, a veteran partisan who fought against the Italian occupation. Guriqi shared his personal experiences and stories of bravery, which left the audience in awe. “We were the voices of freedom, and we fought with our hearts and souls,” Guriqi recalled. “It was a difficult time, but we remained united and resolute in the face of adversity.”
The celebration also included a solemn ceremony to honor the memory of fallen partisans. A wreath-laying ceremony took place at the Castle’s War Memorial, attended by government officials, veterans, and members of the general public.
As the sun set over the Adriatic Sea, the attendees gathered around the campfire for a lively evening of traditional Albanian cuisine, music, and storytelling. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, tears, and a deep sense of pride and identity.
