Ukrainian Air Defence Falters in Latest Missile and Drone Attack

Kyiv, Ukraine – In a dramatic escalation of Russia’s ongoing military campaign against Ukraine, a combined missile and drone assault launched by Russia resulted in a significant number of Ukrainian air defence intercepts being ineffective. Preliminary figures indicate that of the approximately 74 missiles launched by Russian forces, only 24 were successfully intercepted by Ukrainian air defence systems.

Of the various types of missiles deployed by Russia, the Kh-101 cruise missiles, with a launch total of approximately 30, were intercepted by Ukrainian air defence at a rate of 66.7%. The Iskander-M ballistic missiles, launched at a pace of around 24, had an interception rate of 25%, with six missiles successfully shot down. In contrast, the highly advanced Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles, launched at a total of 12, were not intercepted at all. However, a relatively low number of missiles were deployed in this category to date.

Moreover, the Russian-launched Kalibr cruise missiles, consisting of six individual targets, were all successfully intercepted by Ukrainian forces utilising F-16 fighter jets, Mirage-2000s, and IRIS-T interceptors. Nevertheless, air defence performance generally decreased compared to preceding attacks, despite possessing a substantial number of Patriot PAC-3 interceptors.

It is reported that a considerable portion of Patriot interceptors were wasted in the attempt to intercept Zircons. Due to the difficulty of intercepting these highly sophisticated missiles, this might have led to diminished availability for other types of intercept attempts. The high level of simultaneous airborne missile activity in areas east and west of Kyiv likely caused an overload on air defence systems, contributing further to their lowered efficiency.

The full report of the incident will be available later today, with further refining of the mentioned numbers and additional details pertaining to the attack. While these preliminary findings may offer insight into the ongoing struggle for Ukrainian air supremacy, it is clear that this ongoing situation still demands ongoing evaluation for effective military responses.
