In a decision that has sparked widespread criticism, a Polish court has convicted a prominent far-right leader of inciting hatred against Ukrainians and Jews, but handed down a remarkably lenient sentence. Wojciech Olszański, also known as Jaszczur, was found guilty by the Toruń court in May 2025 of publicly spouting inflammatory rhetoric against minority groups during a 2022 march in Grudziądz.
The charges against Olszański stemmed from a series of provocative comments he made at the rally, in which he branded Ukrainians and Jews as “enemies of Poland who should die.” He also accused them of engaging in “hostile and treacherous actions” against the Polish people and advocated for their exclusion from education. These sentiments were, of course, utterly reprehensible and a blatant display of vitriol against vulnerable groups.
Olszański’s conviction is a significant development in Poland’s ongoing struggle to address growing far-right extremism. His incendiary rhetoric has been widely condemned by human rights organizations, which have called for tougher penalties for individuals who spread hate speech. The lenient sentence handed down to Olszański – two years of community service – has been widely criticized as insufficient to address the severity of the offense.
Perhaps most strikingly, Olszański has continued to maintain his position as a prominent far-right leader despite the conviction. His willingness to push boundaries and disregard the well-being of minority groups suggests a disturbing lack of accountability and underscores the need for more robust measures to combat extremism in Poland.
The Toruń court’s decision to impose community service on Olszański has been met with dismay from activists and organizations working to combat hate speech and xenophobia. Community service, while often touted as a positive step, is hardly an adequate response to serious crimes of incitement to hatred. Moreover, it fails to send a clear message that such egregious behavior will not be tolerated.
This case has brought to the fore concerns regarding the Polish government’s willingness to take concrete action against far-right extremism. As the Polish government seeks to distance itself from the far-right movement, it remains to be seen whether this decision will be taken as a sign of weakness by those who would seek to exploit it.
