Venezuela’s government has come under fire for allegedly obstructing the delivery of aid and humanitarian assistance to areas affected by the devastating earthquakes that struck the country last week. The earthquakes, which have now claimed more than 2,000 lives, have left numerous people stranded under rubble, with many still missing.
According to humanitarian organizations operating on the ground, the Venezuelan regime has imposed a series of restrictions that are delaying the entry of rescue teams, equipment, and essential supplies into the affected areas. These organizations claim that these restrictions are hindering their ability to provide critical aid to those in need.
Amavex, a humanitarian organization that has been working closely with Venezuelan communities, reported that the Policía Nacional Bolivariana (Policía Nacional) had blocked firefighters from participating in rescue operations. According to Amavex officials, this action has significantly slowed down the rescue efforts.
In another instance, ISAR Germany, a German disaster response organization, alleged that the Venezuelan government had prevented a team of German and Austrian specialists from entering the country, despite previous commitments to allow international assistance. ISAR Germany officials stated that the government’s actions have compromised the effectiveness of rescue operations and put more lives at risk.
Francisco Lermanda, a representative of the Topos de Chile rescue team, posted a video on social media detailing the operational difficulties faced by his team. Lermanda reported that Venezuelan military personnel had repeatedly interrupted rescue operations to demand identification documents from responders, allegedly suspecting that team members were spies.
Humanitarian organizations and experts have expressed deep concerns over the Venezuelan government’s handling of the crisis, warning that continued obstructions will only exacerbate the already dire situation. With the search for missing persons entering its second week, the international community is increasing pressure on the Venezuelan regime to allow unfettered access to aid and assistance.
As the crisis deepens, it remains to be seen whether the Venezuelan authorities will take steps to address these concerns and ensure the safe delivery of aid to those affected by the earthquakes.
