Thousands Gather for Farewell of Former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei

Iran on Monday marked a significant day as the body of the former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, arrived at a grand farewell ceremony near Imam Khomeini’s Hussainiyah in Tehran. Thousands of mourners flocked to the site, paying their respects to the man who led the country for nearly four decades.

The ceremony took place in a specially prepared area within the compound of Imam Khomeini’s Hussainiyah, a prominent location for Iranian Shiites mourning rituals. The former Supreme Leader’s body was carried on a traditional funeral bier adorned with flowers and covered with a black velvet cloth, as per Iranian tradition.

As the coffin arrived, loudspeakers began playing a traditional Iranian song in commemoration of the late leader. Ayatollah Khamenei passed away on 30 June 2024, at the age of 83. His body has been taken on a journey across the country, allowing people to pay their respects before the final funeral rites.

The procession is expected to take several days to reach the holy city of Qom, the spiritual heartland of Iran, where the late Supreme Leader will be buried alongside his predecessors. According to Iranian media outlets, the journey is intended to allow people from all walks of life, including politicians, scholars, and common citizens, to honor the memory of Khamenei.

Ayatollah Khamenei’s tenure as Supreme Leader was marked by controversy, including widespread protests and international sanctions imposed on Iran due to allegations of nuclear ambitions and human rights abuses. Despite these challenges, he maintained a firm grip on power and was a crucial figure in Iran’s resistance to Western intervention throughout his rule.

Iran’s current Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ebrahim Raisi, has been leading the funeral procession, paying tributes to his predecessor and assuring the nation that Iran’s future would remain resilient under Khamenei’s legacy. As the country mourns the departure of its former leader, questions arise about the future direction of Iran under the new Supreme Leader, given the existing global tensions and the need for reform.

Tensions between Iran and Western nations, particularly the United States and Israel, remain high. While some analysts predict the continuation of a hardline stance by the new leadership, others are cautiously optimistic about potential shifts in Iran’s policies. However, for now, the focus remains on mourning and paying respects to the departing Supreme Leader as the country grapples with the implications of his departure on its future trajectory.
