LATEST AIRCRAFT DEAL: Saudi Airlines Retires Boeings, Finds New Home in Iran

DUBAI, UAE – In a move that may seem like a strategic shift in the complex Middle Eastern landscape, five Boeing 777-268ER wide-body aircraft previously operated by Saudi Arabian Airlines have been delivered to the Iranian carrier Mahan Air, according to recent reports from industry insiders.

The 777-268ER model is a well-regarded commercial airliner renowned for its reliability and efficiency. The Boeing 777, in particular, has become a staple in many airlines’ fleets, with Mahan Air being one of the few Iranian carriers that operate this highly sought-after aircraft.

Mahan Air reportedly has two of the retired Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeings, registration numbers HZ-AK21 and HZ-AK22, currently stationed at Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport. This move has been interpreted by some as a possible compensation strategy by Riyadh following recent diplomatic tensions with Tehran.

However, when quizzed on the specific details behind this transaction, Saudi Arabian Airlines officials remained tight-lipped, simply stating that they are “focusing on their fleet renewal strategy.” A spokesperson for Mahan Air, when reached for comment, also declined to discuss the specifics of the Boeing purchase.

Industry analysts are speculating that this deal may not be directly linked to any immediate diplomatic efforts between the Saudi government and Iranian authorities, but rather could be part of a broader long-term business strategy aimed at strengthening Iran’s aviation sector.

“Given Mahan Air’s growing regional presence and reputation for providing high-quality air travel services, securing these Boeing 777-268ERs at an attractive price is undoubtedly a boost for their operations,” noted Farhad Mirzaei, an aviation expert at the Middle East Aviation Studies Center in Dubai.

“It’s also important to note that these five planes, which are relatively young, represent a vital replacement of older models in Mahan Air’s fleet,” added Mirzaei. “We can anticipate more business opportunities emerging in the near future between Iranian companies and major international aircraft manufacturers seeking to capitalize on this new partnership.”
