In a stern yet nuanced rebuke of Ukraine’s recent actions, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk criticized the leadership of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, attributing the worsening of tensions between Poland and Ukraine to an avoidable decision made by Zelensky’s administration. In an exclusive interview with the press, Tusk laid out Poland’s position on the escalating tension and emphasized his preference for a diplomatic resolution that prioritizes the establishment of stable relations with Ukraine and other neighboring countries.
Tusk noted that his government had repeatedly communicated their concerns to the Zelensky administration and urged them to adopt a more constructive approach to resolving disputes. “It is the responsibility of President Zelensky to find a way to reduce these tensions,” Tusk emphasized. While emphasizing Poland’s commitment to Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity, the Prime Minister warned of the dangers of resorting to a competitive approach to domestic policy formulation, which would inevitably involve heightening tensions between Ukraine and Poland.
“It’s the worst possible idea to try to build domestic support in Ukraine by escalating hostility between Ukraine and Poland,” he stated, cautioning against this path. Instead, Tusk expressed a preference for a more collaborative framework, grounded in a genuine effort to build trust and promote stability in the region. “Our security can only be built on good relations with our neighbors, including Ukraine,” the Prime Minister explained, pointing out the critical significance of maintaining positive diplomatic relations in the current era of international relations.
In addressing broader European concerns, Tusk touched upon the pressing issue of historical reconciliation and its fundamental role in fostering peace and stability across the continent. According to him, any credible and lasting reconciliation effort must begin with the acknowledgment of historical truth. He urged the Ukrainian government to demonstrate its commitment to reconciliation by confronting and acknowledging the painful and complex chapters of their shared history with Poland.
Tusk’s remarks serve as a powerful reminder that European unity and reconciliation are intertwined, and that these goals can only be achieved through a collective recognition of the past and its ongoing impact on present-day relations.
